-
- The data in \4International Financial Statistics\0 are reported in three
- frequencies. This search field allows the users to select a subset of
- these frequencies for the current inquiries by directly typing the entry or
- using the \4F2:Browse\0 facility. Allowed entries are as follows.
-
- \4A\0 or \4a\0 Annual data
- \4Q\0 or \4q\0 Quarterly data
- \4M\0 or \4m\0 Monthly data
-
- Multiple entries should be separated by commas, e.g.
-
- \4a,m\0 for annual and monthly but not quarterly data.
-
- Press \4<F2>\0 to enter the browsing facility. This will cause a window to
- appear which lists the frequencies available. The number to the left of
- each frequency is the number of series in the database associated with that
- frequency. The user may move up and down this browse window by pressing
- the up and down arrow keys. When a frequency is highlighted by the cursor,
- pressing enter will add that frequency to the list selected, close the
- window, and return to the main menu.
-
- Pressing the \4<Esc>\0 key when the cursor is on the \4Frequencies
- Selected\0 field in the main screen of the search mask will clear the

-
- This search field allows for the selection of a range of quarters for the
- current inquiry. The default selection is Q1, 1957 to the present. User
- selection may take place by any combination of keyboard input or use of the
- \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field ranges of quarters may be specified by
- separating the first and last period of the range by two periods (e.g. 1957
- Q1..1961 Q3). Discontinuous ranges should be separated by commas followed
- by one or more blank spaces (e.g. 1958 Q1, 1958 Q3, 1970 Q2). These
- specifications may be mixed (e.g. 1957 Q1..1961 Q3, 1962 Q1..1962 Q4, 1965
- Q2, 1970 Q4, 1975 Q3..1982 Q2). Note that the basic specification of a
- quarter always takes the form <year><space><Quarter>.
-
- When using the browsing facility the following keys have the functions
- described below.
-
- \:<F2>\0 Pressing this key brings up a window which contains
- all the dates available (i.e., <year><quarter>) in the
- application in the right pane. The default selection
- is all periods which is indicated by the \XFB in front

- the menu.
-
- When first entering the \4Quarters:\0 window the left pane takes precedence
- over the right pane. Thus, when a quarter is selected/deselected in the
- left pane all matching quarters in the right pane are also
- selected/deselected. This precedence is overridden when selections are
- made directly in the right pane.
-
- If an annual period was selected before entering the \4Quarters:\0 field,
- the field will reflect that annual selection. The selection may be
- modified by directly editing the selection or changing the selection using
- the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- Note that when either entry method is used to update the \4Quarters:\0

- \5 Country Name\0
-
- Every time series in \4International Financial Statistics\0 is associated
- with a country name. The country name may be the name of a country such as
- Belgium or Angola or of a geographic area such as Asia or World. The term
- "country" as used in this publication does not in all cases refer to a
- territorial entity that is a state as understood by international law and
- practice; the term also covers some territorial entities that are not
- states but for which statistical data are maintained and provided
- internationally on a separate and independent basis.
-
- User selection of countries may take place by any combination of keyboard
- input into the field or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility. When keying
- data into this field, entries should be separated by commas (e.g.,
- Guam,France,Chad). Spaces on either side of the comma are optional.
-
- Press\4F2:\0 to enter the browse facility. This will cause a window to
- appear which lists the countries that are included in the database. The
- number to the left of each country entry indicates the number of time
- series in the database associated with that country. The user may move up
- and down this browse window by pressing the up and down arrow keys or by
- typing the initial letters of the country name desired. When typing
- characters in the browse window, the cursor will move to the first entry
- that has the characters typed (e.g., typing "Au" will move the cursor to
- Australia). This type ahead feature and the arrow keys may be mixed to
- obtain the country desired. Thus, typing "G" followed by two entries of
- the down arrow will place the cursor on Germany. When a country is
- highlighted by the cursor, pressing enter will close the window, add that
- country to the list selected, and return to the main menu.
-
- Note that entries may be separated by the connectors "and", "or", or
- "without" instead of a comma. Using these connectors produces the boolean
- operation selected. A comma is equivalent to the boolean or. When typing a
- country name a question mark may be substituted for a letter. This would
- select any country that meets the typed specification with any character in
- the position of the question mark. An asterisk in the country name implies
- that any sequence of characters may be substituted for the asterisk. Thus,
- very complex selections may be generated. For example, the specifications
- \4G* without Germany or *ns\0 would result in the selection of all
- countries whose names begin with "G" except for Germany and all area
- groupings with the suffix "ns" which is the abbreviation for "not
- specified".
-
- Pressing the \4<Esc>\0 key when the cursor is on the \4Country Name\0 field
- in the main screen of the search mask will clear the selection and return
- to the default selection for this field (i.e., all countries implicitly
- selected).

-
- \5 Time Series Topic\0
-
- The time series topic is a broad grouping of series into conceptual areas
- of coverage such as employment, exchange rates, prices, etc. User
- selection of these items may take place by any combination of keyboard
- input or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field, items may be separated by commas or one
- of the boolean operators (and, or, without). A comma is equivalent to the
- boolean or. Wild card characters "?" and "*" may be used for any single
- character or any group of characters respectively. Thus, int* trade will
- result in the selection of the entry International Trade.
-
- Pressing \4<F2>\0 will activate the browsing facility and a screen will
- appear with the various topics available. The number to the left of every
- topic is the number of series found within this topic in the database. The
- cursor may be moved by pressing the up or down arrow keys or typing the
- letters for a desired entry. As letters are typed, the cursor will jump to
- the first entry which contains the letters. Thus, typing "pro" will move
- the cursor to the entry production. Pressing the enter key will result in
- the item highlighted by the cursor being added to the current selection and
- a return to the main menu. Pressing the \4<Esc>\0 key will close the
- window without making a selection.
-
- Pressing the \4<Esc>\0 key when the cursor is on the \4Time Series Topic\0
- field in the main screen of the search mask will clear the selection and
- return to the default selection for this field (i.e., all topics implicitly
- selected).

- \5 Partner Country Name\0
-
- This search field allows for the selection of the partner country
- associated with a given time series. For most of the time series included
- in \4International Financial Statistics\0 there is no partner country. The
- small set of time series for which a partner is included are mostly related
- to international banking data or commodity data. User selection of this
- item may take place by any combination of keyboard input or use of the
- \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field, items may be separated by commas or a
- boolean operator (and, or, without). Spaces may be freely used around
- these separators. A comma is equivalent to the boolean or.
-
- Pressing \4<F2>\0 will produce a window containing the partner country
- names. The number to the left of the names is the number of time series
- associated with each name. The user may move around the window by pressing
- the up and down arrow keys or typing the initial characters of the partner
- country name desired. When typing the cursor will move to the first
- country with the letters typed. The ? and * keys may be used for wild
- cards for a single character or group of characters respectively. Thus,
- typing U* will generate a selection of all the unspecified country entries
- for partner country code. Pressing the enter key will result in the item
- highlighted by the cursor being added to the current selection and a return
- to the main menu. Pressing \4<Esc>\0 will close the window without making
- a selection.
-
- Pressing \4<Esc>\0 key when the cursor is on the \4Partner Country Name\0
- field in the main screen of the search mask will clear the selection and
- return to the default selection for this field (all partner countries
- implicitly selected).

-
- \5 Time Series Code\0
-
- This search field allows for the selection of a time series by specifying
- the unique thirteen-character time series code which is associated with all
- time series in the \4International Financial Statistics\0 database. For a
- detailed description of the time series code see the documentation that
- accompanied this CD-ROM product. Briefly the time series code is
- constructed as follows: \4CCCTTTTTVSPPP\0, where,
-
- \:CCC\0 Three-character country code (always numeric)
- \:TTTTT\0 Five-character topic code (usually 2 numerics followed
- by 3 alphabetics)
- \:V\0 Single-character version code (always alphabetic)
- \:S\0 Single-character control source code (always
- alphabetic)
- \:PPP\0 Three-character partner country code (usually numeric)
-
- Periods are used as positive holders to indicate a blank in these codes.
- User selection of the time series code may take place by any combination of
- keyboard input or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field, entries may be separated by commas or a
- boolean operator (and, or, without) and spaces may be used freely around
- the separators. The wild characters "?" and "*" may be used in place of a
- character in the name to specify any character or any group of characters
- respectively. Thus, "156*" will select all the time series for Japan and
- "5246?...ZF..." will select a collection of price indices for Sri Lanka.
-
- Pressing \4<F2>\0 key will produce a window that lists all 23,000+ time
- series keys in the database. Users may move through the window using the
- up and down arrow keys or by typing in the initial characters of the key
- desired. Thus, typing "54212" will move the cursor to the first of the
- claims of monetary authorities series for Korea. The type head and up and
- down arrow keys may be mixed in the generation of a selection. Pressing
- enter will result in the highlighted time series key being added to the
- current selection and a return to the main menu. Pressing \4<Esc>\0 key
- will result in the window being closed without making a selection.
-
- Pressing the \4<Esc>\0 key when the cursor is on the \4Time Series Code\0

- explained in detail in the documentation that accompanies this CD-ROM
- product. User selection may take place by any combination of keyboard
- input or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field, country codes should be separated by
- commas or boolean operators (and, or, without) with any number of spaces
- before and after these operators. The wild card characters "?" and "*" may
- be used to represent the individual or groups of characters respectively.
- Thus, the selection "4*" or "4??" would select all the countries in the
- Middle East.
-
- Pressing \4<F2>\0 will produce a country code window listing all the
- country codes in the database. The number to the left of the country code
- indicates the number of series associated with any given code. The user

- combination of keyboard input or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into the this field, the subject codes may be separated by
- a comma or boolean operator (and, or, without) with any combination of
- spaces surrounding the separators.
-
- Pressing \4<F2>\0 will produce a subject code window listing all the
- subject codes associated with the time series in the database. The number
- to the left of these codes is the number of time series associated with
- each given subject code. The user may move about this window using the up
- and down arrow keys or typing in the initial characters of the country
- code. Thus, typing "34" will move the cursor to the first of a group of
- series whose subject codes begin with these two characters. Pressing enter
- will result in the subject code that is highlighted being added to the

-
- This search field allows for the selection of a range of months for
- the current inquiry. The default selection is January 1957 to the
- present. User selection may take place by any combinations of
- keyboard input or use of the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-
- When keying data into this field ranges of months may be specified by
- separating the first and last period of the range by two periods (e.g. 1987
- Oct..1988 Feb). Discontinuous periods should be separated by commas
- followed by one or more spaces (e.g. 1963 Jun, 1964 Apr, 1973 Nov). These
- specifications may be mixed (e.g. 1959 Nov, 1962 Apr, 1975 Jun..1980 Sep).
- Note that the basic specification of a month always takes the form
- <year><space><month>.
-
- When using the browsing facility the following keys have the functions
- described below:
-
- \:<F2>\0 Pressing this key brings up a two-pane window which
- contains the twelve months in the left pane and all the
- dates available (i.e., <year><month>) in the
- application in the right pane. The default selection
- is all periods which is indicated by the \4\XFB\0 in
- front of each entry in both panes.
-
- \:<Del>0 The delete key deselects all periods.
-
- \:<Ins>0 The insert key selects all periods.
-
- \:<Space>\0 The space bar selects/deselects a single period and
- moves the cursor to the next period.
-
- \:\x1A\0 The right arrow moves the cursor to the right pane
- of the window.
-
- \:\x1B\0 The left arrow moves the cursor to the left pane of the
- Window.
-
- \:\x18\0 The up arrow moves the cursor up one line.
-
- \:\x19\0 The down arrow moves the cursor down one line.
-
- \:<Esc>\0 The escape key closes the window and returns to the
- main menu without making a selection.
-
- \:<Enter>\0 The enter key closes the window and returns to the
- main menu with the selection made now showing in the

-
-
- When first entering the \4Months\0 window the left pane takes precedence
- over the right pane. Thus, when a month is selected/deselected in the left
- pane all matching months in the right pane are also selected/deselected.
- This procedure is overridden when selections are made directly in the right
- pane.
-
- If an annual or quarterly period was selected before entering the
- \4Months:\0 field, the field will reflect this previous selection. The
- selection may then be modified by directly editing the selection or
- changing the selection using the \4F2:Browse\0 facility.
-

-
- \5 Country Name\0
-
- Every time series in \4International Financial Statistics\0 is associated

- \5 All Items in the Database\0
-
- \5 Country Name\0
-
- Every time series in \4International Financial Statistics\0 is associated
